About Me

Gary Semics

Hi, my name is Gary Semics. I’ve been teaching motocross for over 35 years. I know what most riders want. They want to become a better, safer rider. Don’t risk crashes and injuries, instead learn how to ride with more control, smoother, faster, and more efficiently! Obviously, this equals more fun, also!

I have trained many thousands of riders from MX beginners to the world’s best, including McGrath & Villopoto.

Over the last 35 + years I’ve discovered how to break all the techniques of motocross down into separate teaching blocks, micro techniques.  For example, there are many braking techniques happening while entering a corner. I have separated all these individual techniques into separate practice drills.

I’m confident you’ll be happy with how much my Motocross Schools and/or Streaming Technique Videos can help you “Become a Better, Safer Rider”!

My Background

My motocross credentials is what enable me to help Motocross racers win 26 AMA Pro Championships! By the time I was 15 I was racing about every weekend and practicing about 3 or 4 days per week.  By age 16 I was racing the open expert class and winning just about everything in PA, OH and NY. At age 18 Husqvarna started my Factory Racing Career. I stayed with Husky for 3 years (1972, 73 and 74). Then it was Factory Kawasaki for 3 years, then Can-Am for 1 year, then Honda for 1 year, Yamaha for 1 year and Suzuki for 1 year.  During that time I won the 500cc Supercross Championship for Husqvarna in 1974. I also won several Nationals and placed 2nd and 3rd in the AMA 500 National Series in 1976 and 1979. In 1977 I raced as a member of the U.S. team in the Motocross and Trophy des Nations that were held in France and Holland. In 1982 I began racing in the 500cc World Championship Grand Prix Series. My best year was 1982 when I placed 7th in the 500cc series. During my racing career I was always a top 10 finisher in World Class Motocross Competitions.

Riding

I’m proud of my accomplishments because I know how hard I worked at it but at the same time I realize I could have done better if I knew how to prepare better.  If I knew how to test and adjust the bike better, how to learn and practice better, how to make better decisions, not only in racing but in life in general.

I guess you could say I learned by trial and error, by making mistakes, learning the hard way, going to the school of hard knocks.

I believe that falling short of my potential, as many other racers have done, gave me the motivation to teach and coach young upcoming motocross riders to not make the mistakes I had made, to do things correctly, and to bring out the best in them.

In 1985 when my pro racing career ended, I couldn’t just stop racing all together.  So I went full circle back to racing the local scene in SO CAL as a privateer.  That was when I also began teaching motocross schools.  I raced pretty much every weekend and did schools for the next 13 years in Southern California.  I then moved back to my home state of Ohio and did the same there for the next 16 years.

Then, at 62 I didn’t race much anymore, but still rode and trained off the mx bike. I’m still doing the same now at 67.

Over the years  I’ve trained thousands of riders, but the one’s you’ve probably heard the most about are Jeremy McGrath, Kevin Windham and Ryan Villopoto. I was Jeremy’s personal trainer for most of his career. I trained Kevin and Ryan for a few years back in their earlier days.

I have trained and coached many other top pro motocross racers, including John Dowd, Ezra Lusk, Mike Brown, Brock Hepler, Stephane Roncada, Brock Sellards, Steve Lamson, Ernesto Fonseca, Brian Swink, Kyle Lewis, Jiri Dostal and Branden Jesseman. I’ve also trained Off-Road heroes Fred Andrews, Chuck Woodford and Rich Lafferty. My MX and SX racers combined have won 26 AMA Pro Championships!

I have found that I have a real passion for teaching, and it has become my goal to train motocross riders around the world.  Not only am I doing this through my motocross schools, Techniques/Training Streaming Videos but also through my Certified MX Instructors. These instructors teach around the world under my teaching methods and strategies.  Currently there are 11 GSMXS Certified MX Instructors located in 7 countries.
